Ion Beam Lab Computers Acceptable Use Policy

This document is intended to provide guidelines for usage of the Ion Beam Lab's computer network. Beyond common sense and courtesy, these guidelines will provide Faculty, Students & Guests with an understanding of how our computers should be used. If there are any questions or requests, they should be brought to the attention of the Lab staff. Revised May 31, 2007

  • Computer usage:
    • The primary use of IBL computers is to provide the Faculty & Students the tools required for performing their research. All other uses are secondary.
    • Data analysis takes priority over all other uses.
    • No games are to be installed, downloaded or played on ANY computers in this Laboratory
    • Use of computers to play music or video is discouraged, this is to avoid interfering with others working nearby.
    • Users are NOT allowed to install or remove software on any of our computers.
    • Users will NOT run programs other than those provided by the lab.
    • All disks brought into the lab will be subject to virus scanning software. Anyone finding a virus on their disks must report it to the staff at once.
    • Use of personal laptops is allowed in the computer cluster area as long as that use is lab research in nature.
  • Printer usage:
    • Printers are available for laboratory and department related document printing only.
    • The printers are not to be used as a copy machine.
    • Please avoid wasting paper, do not make a multi-page printout until your document has been corrected. Please only print the pages that were edited.
    • ONLY approved transparencies can be used in the color Laser printers, others will jam and possibly damage the printers.
    • Avoid excess/unnecessary use of color printing. The Color Laser supplies are very expensive.
  • File Storage:
    • Users are allowed to store files on the server in the “My Documents” directory which is also labeled the “H: Drive”
    • Users can request to have a subdirectory on the H: drive.
    • Directories on the H: drive with unidentifiable names will be removed.
    • Users are expected to keep their directories on the H: drive to a minimal size. Unneeded files should be deleted or moved to removable media.
    • The Directory H:\user is available for temporary file storage and will be emptied frequently
    • All users storing files on the H: drive should have backup files on removable media. If problems arise with the server files you could loose all your data.
    • Users will NOT create directories or add files to the Computers hard drives or Desktop except the H: Drive
    • User files found in any location other then the H: drive will be deleted.
    • Program files (.EXE .COM .DLL), other then what the Lab provides are not allowed to be stored or executed on our computers. NO exceptions without prior approval.
  • Internet Usage:
    • We are currently providing access to the Internet on our network. Due to the possibility of viruses and risks of malicious attacks on our network some types and times of access are restricted. Any attempt to bypass these restrictions or to fail to follow these guidelines will result in loss of your computer privileges.
    • Internet access is provided as a research communications tool. Use for games, watching video or non-research chat is not permitted. All unnecessary Internet usage is discouraged.
    • Changing the home page or other settings on Internet browsers is not allowed.
    • Users are NOT allowed to download or run executable programs off the Internet.
    • Use of Internet File sharing software is prohibited on our network lines.
    • Any use of IBL or student owned computers that violates federal law or University policy will be dealt with accordingly. Students who violate the policy can be subject to a $50 administrative fee, judicial referral, and possible loss of all University computing privileges (including access to MyUAlbany) pending the outcome of their referral.

Users of computers in the Ion Beam Lab must read and agree to the University ITS Policies
Users who attach equipment to the network in the Ion Beam Lab are required to comply with the University ITS Connection Standards
